Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore is a research-oriented university. It is ranked amongst the top 20 universities in the world. IISc has recently started offering Science and Technology courses at Undergraduate Level. These courses are amongst some of the finest available in the world. Major disciplines offered are Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Material Sciences, Mathematics and Physics. Admissions are done via various national level examinations like JEE Mains and Advanced, KVPY and NEET. Candidates are asked to apply on a separate application for IISc Bangalore. Candidates are shortlisted on their ranks in the aforementioned exams.

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science is another premier institute reputed for producing world class engineers. It has a vast alumni network, with its graduates occupying leading roles in entrepreneurship, multinational institutions, governments and research facilities throughout the world. Its mission is to “train young men and women who are eager to create new ideas and put into action such ideas, methods, techniques and information.” BITS Pilani has three campuses in the country, in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad. The admission through this institute is done via a nation-wide test conducted by the institute itself known as the Birla Institute of Technology and Science Aptitude Test (BITSAT).

The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are a group of higher education engineering institutes in India. Comprising of 20 autonomous Institutes, they are in every major state/territory in India. At the time of inception, NITs were referred to as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) and were governed by their respective state governments. The institutes are of national importance.

They were founded to promote regional diversity and multicultural understanding in India. Thus, in all NITs, half the student population is drawn from the home state and the other half is drawn from a nation-wide merit list. The admission to these institutes is done via the JEE Mains examination.
